From Marlenheim to Barr – 35 Kilometres
From Barr to Colmar – 60 Kilometres
From Colmar to Thann -55 kilometres
Rolling vineyards spread along flower-decked Gothic villages -many separated by short  vineyard walks-  medieval castles and monasteries, the Alsace Wine Route winds its way from north to south for 170 kilometres, below the wooded foothills of the Vosges. Along the way you find Winstubs (wine bar- bistros),    Auberges and chic restaurants, in addition to hundreds of inviting wine cellars with excellent wines waiting to be discovered. Signposted roads and vineyard footpaths will guide your visit. through France’s best kept holiday secret. -
The wine route starts in the Bas-Rhin going south from Kuttoslheim along the eastern foothills of the Vosges, at 200-400m of altitude and contiues from Rohrschwihr into the Haut-Rhin on through to Thann. This wine regions covers an area of 14500 hectares in production. The geology of Alsace is a mosaic, made up of granite, limestone, gneiss, schist and sandstone. Such different soils bring out the best in the region’s grape varieties. Alsace enjoys a generous climate. Protected from oceanic influence by the Vosages mountains, and with low rainfall (400-500mm per year), it is blessed with a sunny, dry growing season with several micro climates that account for the diversity of styles for each grape variety. These micro climates are ideal for slow ripening of the grapes, giving wines with elegant, complex aromas and fruit flavours. In Burgundy you get analytical over a wine's structure and balance but in Alsace emotions and imagination will dominate your wine notes.
